The Rare Disease Real-World Data Lab is comprised of dedicated researchers with diverse backgrounds and expertise, all working to improve the lives of rare disease patients through evidence-based research.
Director

Dr. Dong Dong
Dr. Dong Dong is an Assistant Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She holds a BA from Fudan University, an MPhil from CUHK, and a PhD from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Her interdisciplinary research is driven by considerations of justice, equity, and intersectionality in global health contexts. Drawing from her background in journalism, communication, and epidemiology, Dr. Dong employs diverse methodological approaches including meta-ethnography, multi-sited ethnography, real-world data studies, and Q methodology.
She leads the Real-world Data Laboratory in the Shenzhen Research Institute, CUHK, focusing on developing a patient-centric database of rare disease patients in China. Dr. Dong serves on the boards of several organizations including the China Alliance for Rare Diseases, The Illness Challenge Foundation, and Beijing Aili Myasthenia Gravis Care Center.

Dr. Rui Jiang
Dr. Rui Jiang holds a PhD in Sociology from Tsinghua University and joined the Rare Disease Real-World Data Lab at the Shenzhen Research Institute of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in December 2023.

Dr. Elena Nichini
Dr. Elena Nichini holds a PhD in anthropology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the JC School of Public Health and Primary Care, CUHK.
PhD Students

Saba Asim
Dr. Saba Asim is a medical doctor and PhD candidate in Public Health at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her research focuses on the healthcare experiences and challenges faced by ethnically and culturally diverse communities in Hong Kong, particularly South Asians. She employs methods like community-based participatory research and investigates areas such as health communication, vaccination, and risk communication.
Beyond her academic work, she partners with organizations including JCSATH, local NGOs, and the Department of Health to address systemic health inequities and promote health awareness and outcomes for marginalized populations, advocating for equity and empowerment in public health.

Zhengwei Huang
Zhengwei Huang is a PhD candidate in Public Health at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, specializing in Hong Kong pharmaceutical policy and access to cancer drugs, with prior degrees in health management and social medicine from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Guangzhou Medical University. His work focuses on health economics, policy analysis, and improving access to medical treatments.

Fu Faustina Yip
Faustina is a PhD student in Public Health at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She received her BA (History) from The University of Hong Kong and MA (International Relations) from King's College London. Her interests lie in genetic literacy and psychometrics where she is currently exploring its applicability in the prenatal care setting.

Yuki Ishihara
Yuki is a PhD student in Public Health at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was Born in Japan and raised in Shanghai, China. He holds both Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the University of Melbourne.

Tianwei Long
Tianwei is a PhD student in Public Health at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He holds a BSc in Chemistry with a minor in Biochemistry from the University of Bristol (2013) and an MPhil in Bioscience Enterprise from the University of Cambridge (2016). Academic research complements his hobbies of basketball and wry humor – while he enjoys intellectual exploration, his true calling lies in practical innovation that bridges theory with real-world healthcare improvements.

Yusong Zhang
Yusong is a PhD student in Public Health at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received his BE degree in Financial Technology with minors in Computer Science and Statistics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2021. He developed rarebear.org for people involved in rare diseases to chat and write stories with AI. He pursues the use of AI and big data to discover patterns that are beneficial to public health, especially mental health.

Zheng Wu
Zheng Wu is a PhD student in Public Health at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He holds an MM in Epidemiology and Health Statistics from Peking Union Medical College (2023) and a BS in Preventive Medicine from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (2020).
Prior to his PhD studies, he served as a Research Assistant at the Rare Disease Realworld Data Lab, Shenzhen Research Institute, CUHK (2023-2024).
Research Assistants

Jiaqi Liu
Jiaqi Liu holds a Master's degree in Anthropology from Fudan University, where she specialized in Medical Anthropology and conducted extensive ethnographical research on assisted reproductive technologies. She is currently a Research Assistant at The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care.
Her project experience includes "Research on the Social Impact of Assisted Reproductive Technologies", "Making a better baby: An ethnographic study of Preimplantation Genetic Testing in China", and "Navigate the Complexities of Rare Diseases: A community-academic partnership program on co-creating a patient journey visualization toolkit".

Honglin Zhu
Honglin Zhu holds a Master of Public Health degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is currently a research assistant at the JC School of Public Health and Primary Care at CUHK.
